Mission Or Adventure #15 - Creating Brave Work 〰️
Mission OR Adventure is your weekly guide to mastering business as usual while embracing bold innovation—helping you balance what works with what’s next, so you know when to leap or lead. With just a little bit of sparkle thrown in….
From Amanda's Desk
How good is it to finish a project that’s been on the agenda for a long time!?I finally curated a fun Zoom background in the Imagine8 Office so I can move away from the oh-so-handy virtual backgrounds.
This week, I wanted to talk to you about creating Brave Work.
Most corporate learning is designed to be smart. It’s tidy. Efficient. Measured.
Smart doesn’t shift identity.
It doesn’t crack open belief. Brave does.
Brave work is what happens when we stop designing for compliance and start designing for change. Not the kind you can check off in a post-training survey—but the kind that rewires how someone sees themselves. We made it this far without a pop-culture reference, so let’s change that….
Moana didn’t need another how-to guide on ocean navigation. She needed to believe she was the kind of person who could sail beyond the reef. That’s what brave work does—it invites people to become someone new. And if you arent doing that….are you really setting your people up to win?
When we embed that spirit into onboarding, leadership, and training, everything shifts. Because suddenly, it’s not about getting it “right.” It’s about being real.
That’s great Amanda, I hear you lament. What does that actually LOOK like. Great question.
It’s not louder or flashier or with sprinkles. Sprinkles, help - don’t get me wrong. What it needs to be is deeper.
🔹 Brave work evokes emotion, not just cognition. We remember stories that move us—not slides that bore the absolute smarts out of us and are completely forgettable. People don’t transform through bullet points. They transform through meaning. Brave design uses reflection, rituals, and emotional moments.
Think of Barbie (yep, I’m back with the pop-culture with 2023’s existential pink masterpiece).
She didn’t just learn new information—she stepped into a radically new view of the world… and herself. That’s brave work: think of it as disruption with heart.
🔹 Brave work activates identity. We’re not trying to train robots. Or if you are, this is not the right newsletter for you. We’re inviting humans into a new version of themselves. Smart work might say: “Here’s what to do.” Brave work says: “Here’s who you are when you do it.”
Just like Ted Lasso didn’t win games through knowing how to play sooccer—he won hearts through belief.
Belief in people. Belief in purpose. And belief in possibility. That’s what we’re building when we build brave learning environments.
🔹 Brave work allows for imperfection. It creates safety—not just for right answers, but for wrong ones. Brave learning uses failure to teach.
I SWEAR this is the last one….for this edition…
Frodo didn’t succeed because he was the smartest or strongest—he succeeded because he kept going. Brave work makes room for that kind of journey, that exploration.
Alright Amanda, you suckered me in with your clever ideas, you wit and your pop culture references. Also - Why does it MATTER?
I have worked with a trained with a LOT of organisations. And you know what I discovered? Most businesses don’t have a learning problem. They have a belief problem.
Their systems are smart, efficient - the lack soul. Their onboarding is smooth and well…. forgettable. And as I like to say…their culture is written on a wall and not lived in the hall. Where it actually matters.
Brave work solves that.
It encodes identity into systems. It builds culture through rituals. It transforms performance by reshaping belief.
It turns “new hire training” into initiation. It turns “just a job” into a mission.
No gimmicks. Maybe some games. Importantly….story, structure and soul.
So…I wanna see you be BRAVE.
(I lied. So sue me. It was too good to pass up lol)
So be BRAVE and stop building experiences that look good on paper.Let’s create the kind of work that moves people. That wakes them up. That says: 🌀 “This is who we are.” 🌀 “This is who you can become.” 🌀 “And this is where it all starts.”
Because at the end of the day? The bravest thing you can do in business… is build something that makes people feel again. Then THOSE people will help YOU build the business of your dreams.
